Locate and label the home's main water shutoff before an emergency. If a broken pipe is releasing water and the area is safe, close the home's shutoff. EMWD provides guides for house and meter shutoffs.
Do not automatically shut off gas after every earthquake. If you smell gas, hear escaping gas, or suspect damage, evacuate and call SoCalGas from a safe place. Once gas is off, only a qualified professional should restore it.
Stay away from downed lines and damaged or wet electrical equipment. Call 911 for a downed line or immediate electrical danger, then report the hazard to Southern California Edison.
Walk the property in daylight with the owner, manager, or a qualified professional. Write down locations clearly and keep the printable copy near the emergency supplies.
